This was taken at the “House of Bols” museum and bar just opposite the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. For 10€ you get a tour of the museum (including its very interesting scent room), a custom cocktail, a genevers (gin) cocktail and five flavour shots. If you don’t drink, like myself, they’ll also make you up a virgin cocktail. The staff were very friendly and after you’ve gone through the musuem and its drinks (considering a cocktail alone will set you back 7-12€ in A’dam, Paris or Brussels, it’s a good price), there’s a half-decent gift-shop up-top.

BALCONYTV.COM 14/10/2007 APPLE PIE MARTINI by ANJI PRESENTED BY PAULINE FREEMAN A cocktail is a style of mixed drink. However, not all mixed drinks are cocktails. A cocktail usually contains one or more types of liquor and flavorings and one or more liqueurs, fruit juices, sauces, honey, milk, cream or spices, etc. The cocktail became popular with Prohibition in the United States. During Prohibition the art of mixing drinks became more and more important to mask the taste of bootlegged alcohol. The bartenders at a speakeasy would mix it with other ingredients, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. After the repeal of Prohibition, the skills developed in illegal bars became widespread and heralded the golden era of the cocktail, the 1930s. One of the oldest known cocktails, the Cognac-based Sazerac, dates from 1850s New Orleans, as many as 70 years prior to Prohibition. Until the 1970s, cocktails were made predominantly with gin, whiskey or rum, and less commonly vodka. From the 1970s on, the popularity of vodka increased dramatically, and by the 1980s it was the predominant base for mixed drinks. Many cocktails traditionally made with gin, such as the gimlet, or the martini, may now be served by default with vodka. www.drinkonline.eu en.wikipedia.org Tune in again tomorrow!!!

This is a machine that makes a cocktail called a Falling Water. I made it in the garage at our Flat. Made by me (Joseph Herscher). Filmed by Rewa Wright. For those who don’t have access to such a machine as this, here is the recipe for the drink: - 30mls (1Oz) 42BELOW Feijoa Vodka - Ch’i or Lemonade - Long slice of seedless cucumber - Ice Cut a long thin piece of cucumber on a diagonal. Rest it against the inside of a Highball glass. Fill the glass with ice, add 42BELOW Feijoa. Top with Ch’i or Lemonade.

During the 1920s and ’30s, prohibition-dodging Americans visiting London for tea-dances and ‘mixed drinks’ (cocktails), made the bar at the Savoy their home. Here, they were entertained by legendary American barman Harry Craddock, inventor of the White Lady and populariser of the Dry Martini. This book features 750 of Harry’s most popular recipes.During prohibition, liquor-deprived Americans would hop across the Atlantic for glamorous tea dances and cocktails in London.
