Who hasn’t had a ‘Margarita’ or a ‘Sex on the beach’? Although some cocktails may have been given flamboyant names, the truth of the matter is that we all love to taste the mixed flavors elegantly served on a glass or a cup every once in a while.

We can now find cocktail bars, targeted to those people who come out of the office and want to go for a drink in a more upscale place than in a bar or a pub down the street. Such places offer a nice trendy environment, chill out music and videos and cozy seats so you can have a nice talk with your friends.

Cocktail recipes grow by the minute, and nearly every country in the world contributes with a cocktail that has the country’s characteristic booze. Some examples are:

Caipirinha: This brazillian cocktail is made with Brazil’s typical liquor called ‘cachaça’, mashed limes, sugar and ice, although lately, many variants of this delicious drink have come up such as passion fruit caipirinha.

Margarita: Originally from Mexico, this cocktail is prepared with tequila, lime juice, triple sec and salt

Miguelito: This is Costa Rica’s original cocktail made with ‘Guaro Cacique’, the ‘tico’s’ most representative liquor along with Imperial beer. This Cocktail is prepared with Cacique and coconut cream and served either on a shot or chilled.

Mojito: This is Cuba’s cocktail icon, prepared with mashed spearmint leaves, rum, mineral water, sugar and crushed ice. Along with Margarita, this drink is popular around the world as it provides a refreshing flavor with a great after-taste.

Other famous cocktails are: Bloody Mary, White Russian, Grasshopper, Mai-Tai, and Pina Colada.

Cocktails are often happy accidents that happened to the bartender, so do not be afraid and start creating your cocktails at home, and you may be the cerator of the next world-famous cocktail.

A cocktail party is meant to be short and sweet.  Inviting your friends over for cocktails should be a two hour chance to catch up and unwind. You and your guests can get together for just a short time; reconnect and then still have most of the evening to yourself.  And when you consider a shorter cocktail party to celebrate instead of a big party with drinks, dinner and dessert, you might be looking at saving a little money, too.  Consider some of these cocktail party ideas for your next birthday, graduation or next big event.  Pick the perfect urbane cocktail party invitation and you’re well on your way to a suave, grown up party.

The Classic Cocktail Party

When you think of cocktails, the Martini is generally the first libation that comes to mind.  Celebrate the Martini and its sophistication with a charming Martini invitation.  Your guests will be feeling debonair right from the start.  Treat your guests to an updated ‘Martini Bar’ with gourmet stuffed olives and garnishes.  You might need to break out the bartending book to find some other great cocktails that need a revival.  Consider putting a new twist on the Manhattan, the Side Car and the Brandy Alexander for a cocktail restoration.

Custom Cocktail Party

If swank is not your style, but you still love the idea of a cocktail party you’ve got a few other options.  Get your guests involved by making and naming custom cocktails for your guests.  If your friend Jack likes vanilla vodka and chocolate, combine the two for a ‘Jack-hattan.’  When inviting guests ask them RSVP with some of their favorite flavors.  Stock your bar accordingly and you’ll be mixing up custom creations in no time. Keep some fun non-alcoholic juices and sodas on hand, too.

Summer Cocktail Party

Once the weather turns hot, you’ll need some cool beverages for your cocktail party.  Margaritas are the perfect summer cocktail.  Mix up the flavors with peach, mango, strawberry or whatever fruity concoction you can think of.  Another cool favorite on a hot, summer day is the mojito.  And don’t forget a chilled fruity punch for added kick.  Add some finger foods or skewers from the grill you’ve got a red-hot summer cocktail party.

Cold Weather Cocktail Party

Winter doesn’t have to put a damper on your cocktail party.  Add a little heat to your next cold weather cocktail party with spiked apple cider, egg nog or peppermint hot chocolate.  Sipping cocktails by the fire is a wonderful way to celebrate the cocktail and the spirit of the cocktail party.  It won’t matter if the weather outside is ‘frightful’ you’ll have a hip winter cocktail party to keep you and your guests warm.

Whatever event you’re celebrating, a cocktail party just might be an inexpensive and low-key way to enjoy the occasion.  A few cocktails and some finger foods are all you need to celebrate the cocktail and the company of friends.  And don’t forget – just about any cocktail can be made into a ‘mocktail’ for your guests who want to join the fun, but don’t drink alcohol.

Who doesn’t love cocktail drinks? Everybody loves it. But we don’t like are all the extra calories sugared ingredients add to mixed drinks. Some of the delightful choices for the party are Mojito, Margarita, Sour Apple Martini or Whiskey Sours, but can do damage to our regime. Good Spirits CocktailsMixers are sugar free, so we are guilt free. So if you use mixers in your drinks, choose ones that are sugar free.

What do you mean Skinny Cosmopolitan? Many mistakenly believe a Cosmo recipe is always a great choice when looking to enjoy a low calorie “skinny” cocktail. The truth of the matter is variations in the recipe and amounts of each ingredient used can dramatically alter the caloric value of this popular vodka cocktail. And look out…calories are not the only consideration. Hidden in most Cosmopolitan recipes are many unnecessary and unwanted grams of carbs and sugars. So when you are looking to add crisp cranberry and citrus flavors to your vodka cocktails the ingredients choices you make can add up. Here is the Skinny on Cosmopolitan Cocktail Recipes.

A Cosmopolitan recipe calls for pouring amounts of vodka, an orange based liqueur, cranberry juice and lime juice over ice in a cocktail shaker, shaking vigorously for at least 5-10 seconds, straining the contents into a chilled martini glass then garnishing with a lemon twist or lime wedge. Depending on the choices you make the calories in your cocktail can be as few as 72 or over 300. Please note all caloric values are approximate as actual numbers can vary by brand.

To begin our quest for the perfect Skinny Cosmopolitan let’s review and measure the benchmark of Cosmopolitan recipes from the International Bartenders Association: Official Cosmopolitan Recipe

COSMOPOLITAN (Large cocktail glass)

4.0 cl. Vodka Citron

1.5 cl. Cointreau

1.5 cl. Fresh Lime juice

3.0 cl. Cranberry juice

Add all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into large cocktail glass. Garnish with lime slice.

[Wait stop! What is a cl? I am in need of a cocktail recipe not a math class.]

Well just so you know a cl is the metric unit centiliter. One Centiliter is equivalent to .34 fluid ounces. The usual bar measurement is a “jigger” that is 1.5 fluid ounces or another common bar measurement is a “pony” that is equivalent to 1 fluid ounce.

Executive summary

Small decrease in total volume sales

Overall sales of alcoholic drinks in Denmark recorded a slight volume decrease in 2008 compared with the previous year. This represents a continuation of the trend established during the review period, throughout which year-on-year volume decreases were recorded. The strongest growth was, by some way, seen in cider, driven by the launch of the brand Somersby by Carlsberg, however growth was from a very low base, so the importance of cider should not be exaggerated. Minor increases also benefited RTDs and wine, where new product developments and packaging innovations helped to drive volume growth in 2008. However, beer and spirits came under pressure both from changing drinking patterns and the continued cross-border trade from Germany, with the Danes taking advantage of the lower duty levels there.

Celebrate the biggest night in Hollywood with a swanky soiree at your home, using the following chic party ideas.

Establish the theme with your invitation - Send guests a Hollywood-themed invite from an online invitation service.

Creating an exciting party can be as easy as yelling “lights, camera, action” if you stick to the party planning ideas below:

Create your own drama with a red carpet, paparazzi-filled entrance. Hire a student from the local college’s Drama Department to interview guests as the stroll the red carpet, asking questions like, “who are you wearing?” A professional (or non-professional) photographer can snap photos of guests as they enter. The photos can be used as a party favor. Renting a strobe light and placing it at the end of the red carpet will also give the feeling of flashing cameras.

Allow guests to rub shoulders with the stars by placing life-sized cut-outs of Oscar nominees around the room. This will make another unique party favor for guests to take home.

Oscar party recipes: Serve champagne, as well as hors d’ouerves and cocktails named after nominees. What’s a movie night without popcorn? Try these grown-up versions of two movie food favorites:

Savory Herbed Popcorn:

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons peanut oil

3 ounces popcorn kernels, approximately 1/2 cup

1/2 teaspoon popcorn salt

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme leaves

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Place the oil, popcorn and salt in a large, 6-quart, metal mixing bowl. Cover with heavy-duty aluminum foil and poke 10 slits in the top with a knife.

Place the bowl over medium heat and shake constantly using a pair of tongs to hold the bowl. Continue shaking until the popcorn finishes popping, approximately 3 minutes.

Remove the bowl from the heat and carefully remove the foil. Stir in any salt that is on the side of the bowl. Sprinkle the herbs on the popcorn and gently stir to coat.

Melt the butter in the microwave. Slowly drizzle over the popcorn, while spinning the bowl. Stir to combine. Serve immediately. 3 tablespoons peanut oil

Grown-Up Rootbeer Float

Ingredients:

1 oz Galliano® herbal liqueur

2 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur

1 dash cream

1 oz Coca-Cola®

Pour the galliano and kahlua into a highball glass filled with ice. Add a splash of cream, top with coke, and serve.

Don’t forget to have a party game. Play the Oscar guessing game - have each guest select which of the nominees in each category they believe will win. Award points for key categories and the guest with the most points wins an Oscar-worthy swag bag. Fill it with a gift card, bath and body products, spa robe, bottle of champagne, etc.

Send everyone home with and unforgettable party favor - their own mini statue of Oscar. They can be found in novelty stores online.

Do your children come home from school begging for a snack? Or perhaps you are looking for a new cookie for the lunchbox. Give this great old-fashion cookie recipe a try. Some of our best cookie recipes are the vintage ones. These Fruit Cocktail Gems are drop cookies making them very easy to prepare. But it is still a good cookie, especially for the kids. It has fruit from the cocktail plus raisins and heart-healthy walnuts. Walnuts are good-for-you nuts. Let your children learn to love walnuts from an early age. Resist the desire to substitute their favorite nuts and stick with the walnuts. If you want to go even healthier, substitute Splenda granular for the “white” sugar called for.

FRUIT COCKTAIL DROP COOKIES

This recipe was from an old Christian Church in Idaho many, many years ago.

1 can (1 lb size) fruit cocktail

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup white sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 egg

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground cloves

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1/2 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease cookie sheets and set aside.

Drain fruit cocktail saving 1/3 cup of the syrup. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, white sugar, and vanilla until fluffy. Add the egg to the sugar mixture and beat well. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. Add the dry mixture to the sugar mixture along with the reserved 1/3 cup of syrup. Stir in the walnuts, raisins, and fruit cocktail. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned.

Yield: 3 1/2 dozen.

Enjoy!

In the past few years there has been an amazing interest in Tiki bars and Tiki cocktails of yesteryear. Thoughts of Tiki culture may bring back memories of bartenders in colorful shirts from classic television programs or thatch-roof Tiki bars but whatever your memories of Tiki bars entail, these bars are making a comeback.

The good news is that it’s easy to make some of these popular Tiki cocktails at home, without any special equipment and with supplies found at your local store. What you will find with Tiki cocktails is that rum is normally the key ingredient and then it’s mixed with either a fruity or sour flavor and many are topped with fruit, a flower, or umbrella to add a little island flare.

Whether you are hosting a tiki party or just looking to mix up something a little different at happy hour, tiki cocktails offer a tropical twist to you or your guests. Beware the strength of these cocktails though - a couple of rum-loaded Zombies can leave the common man on the floor!

A number of popular Tiki cocktails are fun choices:

The Zombie

Named after its effect on the drinker, the Zombie was first served up in the 1930’s by the famous Donn Beach. It’s smooth, fruity taste can easily disguise the power of the alcohol contained in the Zombie. Ingredients in the Zombie can vary but one popular recipe includes: 1

Fall is a great time for parties, from children’s parties to adult parties. Everything from Halloween to Harvest to Football call for parties.  If you are looking for something new for your party, check out the recipes below.

How about having a taffy pull?  This is fun for all ages and here is one of my vintage recipes for taffy.

TAFFY

2 cups sugar

1 cup light corn syrup

1/3 cup water

2 tsp vinegar

2 tbsp oleo

2 tsp vanilla

In a 2-quart saucepan, combine sugar, syrup, and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil and add vinegar. Cook to soft ***** stage or 268 degrees. Remove from heat, add oleo and vanilla. Pour into 2 buttered plates with edges. Cool until able to handle. Butter hands, gather taffy into a ball and pull with fingertips until satiny in color and hard to pull. Pull each piece until it is about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into bite-size pieces and wrap in waxed paper. Makes about 1 1/4 pounds.

Note:  You can change the flavor of the taffy by using butter flavoring, mint extract, banana extract, or other flavored extracts instead of the vanilla.  For colors, use a drop or two of food coloring to match the flavor you are making; ie yellow for banana, red for peppermint, etc.

Note: This is an old Southern Indiana recipe.

Popcorn balls are another great fall party item.  You can make them in advance or have your guests assist as a party activity.  Here is a recipe for you to try.

NEVER FAIL POPCORN BALLS

1 cup white syrup

1 cup sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp butter

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup unpopped popcorn, popped

Pour popcorn into a large glass mixing bowl or other bowl that won’t be ruined by the hot syrup. Bring syrup to a boil, add sugar to syrup and return to boil. Remove from heat and add baking powder and butter; stir until smooth. Add vanilla. Pour over popcorn, let stand a couple of minutes then shape into balls using your hands that have been lightly buttered.

Yield: approximately 18 popcorn balls

Having a big crowd?  Dig out your large-sized perculator and make our Perculator Punch.

PERCOLATOR PUNCH

Use a 20 to 30 cup percolator to make this punch that serves 16.

1 qt apple cider

1 pt orange juice

1 tsp whole allspice

3 cinnamon sticks

1 pt cranberry juice

1/2 cup sugar

1 tsp whole cloves

Combine cider and juice in percolator. Place sugar, spices, cinnamon sticks in percolator basket. Let perk until finished.

Make your party a little different from all the rest.  A taffy pull and making popcorn balls should do that!  And what a surprise for your guests; punch from a perculator!

Have fun and Enjoy!
