Please be specific! I want to have a cocktail party for 21 yr olds.
Currently there is a hardwood floor, a computer desk, a huge tv, and 3 couches (1 is single). Should I move the couches?
The room is fairly large.

Put two of the couches back to back in the center of the room to create two different areas and the other out of the way perhaps against a wall. Perhaps rent 1 or 2 eight foot tables and linens, black on bottom, white on top, catty cornered, or borrow from somewhere, to display hors d’oeuvres. Or have a friend offer passed horsd’oeuvres. Cover the computer desk with some kind of fabric and maybe some of those glass decorative things that look like a melted marble. You could play music on the computer and use the random ambiance visualization in full screen mode by hitting alt enter after it starts or just play a song on repeat with the volume down if you just want the visual effect. You could use another eight foot table to set up a bar, have a friend bartend for you. You want the center of each of the two areas of the room to be as open as possible. It’s not a bad idea to have a smaller preferably round cocktail table off to the side with a couple of chairs so people can sit and chat. Fresh flowers are a nice touch. Candles lots and lots of candles. Dim the lights, cover them with fabric if neccesary just be careful it doesn’t catch fire. Get the nice clear plastic drink cups and some cocktail napkins perhaps in a color that matches the decor of the room. Go check out party city, you should be able to find some pretty good decoration ideas there. I assume your looking for classy. If not get a keg a bunch of solo cups and a beer pong table.

You might re-arrange the furniture so that it makes conversation easier. And, if you have a big-screen television, you might want it accessible for sports watching etc. Have only as many folks as you can comfortably accommodate and afford. Plan on serving foods from a central location, or, if you have enough room, you can set up smaller tables as food stations. Decorations are whatever you fancy, but keep it simple and remember that candles create a nice atmosphere. And, if you have lots of greenery, those little white Christmas lights are a nice addition to add a little pizazz. Fanciful napkins add to the fun and good food is a must. Keep it simple, but flavorful. Here are some ideas:
1. Cheese platter: Spanish Manchega, Brie, Irish Cheddar, Muenster, and Jarlsburg or Gruyere are nice choices. Add some crisp green globe grapes as a garnish and addition to the platter. Serve with artisan crackers.
2. Antipasti Platter: sopressata, spicy capicola, fennel salami, serrano ham, provolone cheese, marinated artichoke hearts, marinate mushrooms, pepperoncini.
3. Pinwheels: Spread garlic and chive cream cheese on Pillsbury Crescent Roll dough that has been formed into a rectangle. Top with smoked turkey or roast beef, diced green chili’s and roll up. Place seam side down on baking pan and score in 8-10 areas. Bake until golden and puffed. Let cool for 15 minutes before slicing.
4. Spinach Dip in Sourdough Bread Loaf: use the recipe on the Knorr Vege Soup mix.
5. Dessert Platter: lemon bars, mini brownies, cookies, pecan tartlets, eclairs.
Have a wonderful punch as an alternative and serve it in a cut glass punch bowl.
