Brandy is the “traditional” alcohol that’s added to egg nog. I have added both bourbon and rum in the past, and both have been really yummy. I like adding spiced rum, like Captain Morgan’s, as it brings a little extra yum to the table.
Liquor store has a pre-mix that is very good “Evan Williams” brand sells out a lot where I’m located. It does have a nice bite to it as well and is a lot easier than buying eggnog then trying to get the wright mix. But if you are going to mix your own use brandy.

Brandy is typical, but it tastes just fine with rum, too.

In theory, any alcohol that you like.

Brandy is typical. Dark rum can also be used (or light, but dark is better).

i would mix in brandy, a sweeter brandy or whisky instead of rum, egg nog is too rich for a clear liquor
