You don’t have to wear a coat. No one will really see it anyway as you will take it off when you enter.
You can wear a shawl in winter and in summer.
My best advise it to chose a colour that suits you and keep it simple. Don’t go to flashy or frilly. These styles date very quickly.

wear with dark coloured nylons and boots…this should help dress to look a little more season-appropriate…..no need to spend alot of money…..but some cheap boots can be VERY uncomfortable…….as for shawl vs coat……go for both……wear the shawl as a scarf with the coat when outside….then use the shawl for warmth when inside….esp. if the dress is sleeveless…..brrr…………….so, if you buy a summery cocktail dress….then dress it up with these accessories, VOILA, you have a dress that you can wear in all seasons…vs. a wintery cocktail dress that you can’t really pull off in the summer.

Try second-hand stores for inexpensive and unique shawls, scarves and coats.
